Here are just a few advantages we are proud of here at Fort Thomas Unified: Smaller Class SizesWhy does this matter? Because in a school like ours, the teachers and administrators are more likely to know the students and to motivate, track, and encourage their progress. Small schools and small classes are more like families because, like families where parents and children know each other, classes that are small enough to facilitate similar relationships creates bonds of trust and encouragement. According to GreatSchools.net, "Research shows that school size may make a difference in student learning. According to some studies, children in small schools have a stronger sense of belonging, which can lead to increased effort and higher achievement. At the high school level, students at small schools appear to graduate at a higher rate than their peers in big high schools." We see evidence of this each year at Fort Thomas Unified Schools. Our class sizes are kept small to allow for focused, one-on-one teaching opportunities for teachers and invaluable personalized attention students require. Our elementary class size average is 16.9 and the high school averages 8.0 (the state average is 19.4). Quiet Rural LifestyleThe community puts a high priority on education and its supportive attitude is evidenced in the programs and partnerships shared. Though our area is rural, our facilities are modern. Our schools support clubs and extra-curricular activities like field trips, academic contests, and spelling/geography bees. We also enjoy the support of our community and our parents. Exceptional and Experienced StaffOur teaching staff brings higher than average years of experience into their classrooms. 50% of our high school staff and 68% of our elementary staff bring more than 10 years of experience into each class. The state averages are 27% and 48 % respectively. Not only does this provide a definite advantage to our students, it also provides mentoring resources to the newer, younger, or more inexperienced staff who join us. |
